For power internet users like us, a week in Dublin can cause someserious withdrawal and cost some serious dough. Eircom, thelargest telecommunications operator in Ireland, offers over 1,000WiFi hotspots in Ireland including most McDonald’s and most ofDublin’s public phone booths. The catch is that you have to pay inadvance to access them.
At some hubs you will be prompted tomake a payment when you open a browser, like in the Dublin Airportwhich costs around €3 for 30 minutes, others won't let you in atall without being a subscriber.
But when you take into considerationhow much most hotels charge for in room WiFi, (we paid €20 a day atthe Hilton Dublin Hotel for a connection equal to dial up in1999) its a bargain.
Eircom has a monthly subscription plan to their WiFi network for €30.25which gives you a password to access all of their wirelesshotspots.
If you want to use the Eircomservice for free, Insomnia, theStarbucks of Ireland, offers customers a free 20 minute Eircombroadband card to use while in their cafes but you have to ask forit. They don’t advertise the service so most visitors to Dublinnever know about. The locals who have used the card complain aboutthe speeds but slow internet access for free is better than nointernet access at all.
